Chapter 8 - THE DOCTOR MARGARET HIRED
The continuity package cited a physician.
Dr. Leonard West.
A private maternal-care consultant Margaret had hired two months earlier.
Emma had met him once.
He asked questions about sleep.
Anxiety.
Fear of childbirth.
Emma assumed Margaret was being intrusive.
She had not known the answers were becoming a file.
Dr. West’s memo said:
Patient exhibits heightened anxiety, emotional volatility, and distrust of family support.
All technically arguable.
Then:
Postpartum decision capacity should be monitored.
Emma felt sick.
Lucas called the doctor.
“Did you examine my wife for capacity?”
“No.”
“Then why write this?”
“Risk planning.”
“Who asked?”
“Mr. Hale.”
Richard.
Again.
Dr. West had never declared Emma incompetent.
He had only suggested monitoring.
Richard turned that into legal scaffolding.
Margaret admitted she approved the consultation.
“Pregnancy changes people.”
Emma stared.
“No. Power reveals them.”
Margaret flinched.
Then Sarah found something else.
Emma’s actual obstetrician had written the opposite:
Patient alert, rational, medically compliant. Anxiety appropriate to circumstances.
Richard never included that note.
Selection.
Not fabrication.
More sophisticated.
More dangerous.
Sarah explained why the distinction mattered. Richard did not need a fake doctor if he could collect true fragments and arrange them into a false conclusion. Emma had been anxious. She had cried. She had complained that the Kane family was watching her. Each fact became suspicious only after Richard removed the reason for it.
Emma looked at the file and realized how easily fear could be turned into evidence against the person who felt it.
Lucas looked at the two reports.
One emphasized anxiety.
One competence.
