Chapter 14 - THE APOLOGY WITHOUT A DEFENSE

Margaret visited again one week later.
This time Emma invited her.
The penthouse was no longer home.
Emma and Lucas had moved temporarily into a rented townhouse near the lake while deciding whether their marriage could survive everything around it.
Margaret sat in the living room.
Lily slept in a bassinet.
Margaret said:
“I thought I was protecting the family.”
Emma waited.
Margaret continued:
“That is not an excuse.”
Better.
“I believed you would make emotional decisions.”
“I did make emotional decisions.”
Margaret looked surprised.
Emma smiled slightly.
“I was wrong about keeping every hotel.”
Margaret almost smiled back.
Then Emma said:
“But being wrong did not make me yours to manage.”
“No.”
“Being pregnant did not make me incompetent.”
“No.”
“And being family did not make my child your contingency asset.”
Margaret’s eyes filled.
“No.”
Emma looked at her.
“That’s the apology.”
Margaret nodded.
“Yes.”
Lucas stood near the kitchen doorway listening.
Then Margaret looked at him.
“I used your authority.”
Lucas answered:
“And I made it easy.”
Both truths.
No one escaped clean.
Emma picked up Lily.
Margaret watched.
This time Emma held the baby out.
“Sit.”
Margaret did.
Emma placed Lily in her arms.
Margaret began crying silently.
No documents changed.
No shares moved.

Nothing strategic happened.
It was just a grandmother holding a baby because the mother said yes.
