Chapter 3 - THE ACCOUNT WITH HER NAME
The account had been opened eighteen months earlier using Emily’s Social Security number, passport scan, and electronic signature.
She had never seen it.
Money from Sloane’s consulting network entered the account and moved out within hours. The final destination was a property company in the Cayman Islands. To investigators, it looked as if Emily had taken a secret share of the theft.
Charles demanded the best criminal defense team in New York. Emily refused to let him speak for her.
“You don’t get to arrive after six years and turn me into another asset you manage.”
Charles absorbed the words. “Tell me what you need.”
“Believe me without controlling me.”
It was harder for him than writing a check.
At the emergency board meeting, Derek accused Emily and Charles of coordinating a hostile takeover. He showed photographs of Charles entering the mansion moments after Emily froze the payment. The implication was clear: father and daughter had staged a domestic confrontation to trigger the loan covenant.
The board suspended Emily as chief product officer and declined to remove Derek as CEO. It appointed an independent committee instead.
Sloane smiled at Emily across the table.
Then Derek announced a proposed sale of Callahan Systems to Northstar Meridian, a private equity firm. The sale would repay Charles’s loan, remove Emily from management, and preserve Derek’s control through a consulting agreement.
Northstar offered far less than the company was worth.
Emily had built the procurement software at the center of the business before her marriage. She licensed the original code to Callahan Systems under a contract that required accurate financial reporting and prohibited use in criminal transactions. If the company breached those terms, she could seek termination—but only after proving the fraud was not hers.
Sloane knew that too.
That evening, a technician examined Emily’s authentication token. The casing had been opened, but the internal log showed her correct PIN entered for every transfer.
Only three people knew that PIN: Emily, Derek, and Charles.
