Chapter 7 - THE CLAUSE THEY MISREAD
The criminal charge terrified Emily more than the loss of the company.
For one night, she considered Derek’s deal. One statement could protect her freedom and perhaps stop Northstar from destroying what she built.
Charles found her sitting in the hospital parking garage with the unsigned paper.
He did not tell her what to do.
“I spent your childhood solving problems before you could choose,” he said. “Then I punished you for choosing differently. I won’t do either again.”
Emily tore Derek’s statement in half.
Her attorneys challenged the transfer of votes. The marital agreement did not activate merely upon an accusation. It required a final charge supported by a probable-cause finding after an adversarial hearing. Prosecutors had filed a complaint, but no judge had made that finding.
Derek’s rushed vote was invalid.
Northstar argued the error could be corrected after the hearing. Emily therefore had to defeat the criminal case, not just delay the sale.
Priya followed the hidden account’s opening documents. The passport scan came from Emily and Derek’s mortgage application. The electronic signature was copied from a tax form. The bank’s video verification showed a brunette woman whose face was partially obscured.
Sloane had worn a wig.
Facial measurements were suggestive, not conclusive. The decisive evidence came from the bank’s accessibility log. During verification, the applicant requested large captions because she claimed hearing impairment. Sloane had used the same accessibility setting on company video calls and left a distinctive spelling error in the request.
Kaye’s seized phone contained a deleted message from Sloane: Her account is live. Move the first payment.
Prosecutors dismissed the charge against Emily and opened a case against Sloane, Kaye, and Northstar executives.
The board scheduled a new sale vote.
Then Derek announced he had reached a different buyer—one willing to pay full value.
