Chapter 4 - THE FATHER WHO KEPT A COPY

Charles admitted keeping the PIN in an encrypted family file.

He insisted no one at Langford Capital had accessed it. His internal security logs appeared to support him—until investigators found a download from the night before the first fraudulent transfer.

The user credentials belonged to Charles’s late executive assistant.

Someone had preserved a dormant account for years.

Derek used the discovery publicly. He told reporters the Langford family had infiltrated Callahan Systems and manufactured the fraud to reclaim Emily’s technology.

Charles’s own history made the accusation credible. He had built Langford Capital through aggressive takeovers and once forced a founder from her company using a debt covenant nearly identical to the one in Derek’s loan.

“You taught him how to paint this picture,” Emily said.

Charles did not defend himself. “Yes.”

He disclosed the dormant account to federal investigators and stepped away from his firm’s response team. For the first time, he accepted that helping Emily required surrendering power, not displaying it.

The independent committee delayed Northstar’s purchase for ten days. Emily and forensic accountant Priya Desai traced the shell consultants. The money did not flow only toward Sloane. Nearly half financed a quiet purchase of Callahan Systems debt by another Northstar affiliate.

Sloane and Derek were draining the company, depressing its value, and using the stolen money to help finance the buyer that would acquire it cheaply.

But one document complicated everything: an email from Emily to Sloane approving “the Avery structure” and promising to “keep Charles outside the room.”

Emily remembered writing the sentence. At the time, Sloane had presented a legitimate supplier-diversity program called the Avery Initiative. The email’s subject line and attachment had been changed later.

Metadata showed the alteration occurred on Derek’s personal laptop.

Investigators obtained a warrant.

The laptop was gone.

Derek claimed Emily had taken it when she left the mansion.

Then police found it in the trunk of Charles’s car.
