Chapter 8 - THE SECOND BETRAYAL
Emily confronted her father in the same boardroom where Derek had tried to take her votes.
Charles believed his offer was the cleanest rescue. Langford Capital would repay creditors, protect employees, and remove Derek. The price was fair. The terms were legal.
It was also the old Charles: solving his daughter’s future by owning it.
“Withdraw the offer,” Emily said.
“Northstar will return with another structure.”
“Then let me fight it.”
“You could lose.”
“That risk belongs to me.”
Charles withdrew.
Derek accused him of market manipulation and sued Langford Capital for interfering with the sale. The lawsuit delayed refinancing and placed Callahan Systems within days of missing payroll.
Emily proposed a harder solution. She would terminate the company’s license to her procurement platform for fraud, then offer a new license only after independent governance reforms: Derek’s removal, restitution, employee board seats, and a ban on related-party consulting without audit approval.
The board resisted. Without the platform, the company’s value would collapse.
“That is why you should have protected the person who created it,” Emily said.
Derek argued the technology had become marital property. Patent records proved otherwise. Emily created the core system fourteen months before their wedding and licensed it without assigning ownership.
A judge issued a temporary order preventing Callahan Systems from using new versions while the dispute proceeded. Customers began demanding answers.
The pressure forced three directors to abandon Derek. The board removed him as CEO and appointed an independent restructuring officer.
Derek’s power vanished, but the criminal cases remained.
Sloane accepted a cooperation agreement. She admitted the shell-company scheme, forged account, and evidence planting. She also surrendered the original mansion video.
The recording showed Derek raising the belt.
It also captured Sloane saying something after Charles entered—words no one in the room had noticed:
“Kaye said you wouldn’t come until midnight.”
