Chapter 3 - BEFORE THE ACCIDENT
The reservation before Claire’s accident was not for medical recovery.
It was for a three-week parent-and-toddler respite program run by a Northstar partner called Lake Haven Family House.
Daniel had described it as:
Postpartum family reset.
Claire almost laughed.
The twins had already turned one.
She had never discussed going anywhere.
Daniel had written that Claire might benefit from structured support away from home because she resisted asking for help.
Then Claire read:
I need to know what life looks like if I’m not the default second parent.
Olivia found part of the money came from Daniel’s own investments.
He was not enriching himself.
He was spending heavily to build an alternative care structure.
Why?
Hospital social worker Angela Ruiz helped Claire separate the issues.
Paid childcare and respite were not abuse.
The hospital-room aggression was.
The financial plan still required explanation, but one problem did not automatically prove the other.
Then Olivia found another transaction.
$1,250 to Rook & Vale Counseling.
Six sessions.
Claire frowned.
“Daniel has a therapist?”
She had no idea.
The payments started four months earlier.
Before Northstar.
Before the accident.
Before the twins’ first birthday.
Claire asked Daniel through attorneys for permission to confirm only whether the provider was legitimate.
It was.
No one disclosed therapy content without consent.
Daniel eventually agreed to share appointment dates and a short treatment summary.
Reason for treatment:
Caregiver resentment.
Parental overwhelm.
Childhood family-role triggers.
Claire stared.
He had known he was struggling.
He had sought help.
Then why had he kicked a basket into his babies’ path?
The answer was not in the billing.
Then Daniel’s therapist, with Daniel’s written consent, provided one sentence from a session plan:
Client encouraged to disclose resentment to spouse and establish nonviolent respite plan before stress escalation.
Date:
six weeks before the hospital incident.
Claire closed her eyes.
Daniel had been warned to talk.
Instead, he built systems around the conversation.
Then Olivia found a payment that did not fit Northstar or therapy.
$6,800 to Bennett Auto & Storage.
Claire frowned.
“That’s his uncle’s company.”
The memo read:
FAMILY EQUIPMENT HOLD.
Olivia said:
“What equipment?”
Claire had no idea.
Then a second memo appeared:
May you like
NURSERY ITEMS — PICKUP AFTER DISCHARGE.
Daniel had arranged for someone to remove nursery furniture from their home.
