Chapter 8 - THE REIMBURSEMENT

The employer benefit did not prove Daniel stole money.
His company offered up to $10,000 per year for emergency dependent-care expenses.
Daniel had submitted real qualified care invoices, received $9,000, and transferred the full reimbursement back into joint checking.
No personal enrichment.
“So why does this matter?” Claire asked.
“Because of the application.”
Daniel’s benefit form asked:
PRIMARY CAREGIVER REQUESTING SUPPORT:
Daniel Bennett.
That was true enough.
Then:
OTHER PARENT INFORMED OF CARE PLAN:
YES.
Claire stared.
“I was not.”
Daniel said he interpreted the question as:
Does Claire know we need help?
She did.
That was a weak interpretation.
Then the employer’s benefits manager disclosed another line:
Employee states spouse supports professional care rather than employee leave.
Claire froze.
Daniel’s company had also offered four weeks of paid family-care leave.
He declined it.
He told benefits Claire preferred professional support.
She had never said that.
“Why?” Claire asked.
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because I didn’t want leave.”
“Why not?”
“This was not about my job.”
“Then what?”
“If I took four weeks off, I would be the caregiver.”
There it was.
The benefit gave Daniel a way to purchase care instead of taking leave to provide it himself.
“You used me as the reason for a choice you were afraid to own,” Claire said.
“Yes.”
His employer required a corrected statement and compliance review, but the care expenses were still eligible.
Then Claire asked:
“Would you have taken the leave if Northstar didn’t exist?”
Daniel thought.
“I don’t know.”
She did not like that answer.
It was honest.
Then Olivia finished reviewing the daycare deposit.
Meadow Lane Early Learning had held two full-time toddler spots beginning the week after Claire’s anticipated discharge.
Claire had not toured the center.
Had not discussed full-time daycare.
She called the director.
The director said:
“Mr. Bennett was clear the schedule was provisional.”
Again, not a completed decision.
Then Claire asked to see the intake preference page.
Routine contact:
Northstar care manager.
Primary pickup:
Assigned nanny.
Secondary pickup:
Claire Bennett when medically able.
Father pickup:
MEDICAL EMERGENCY / PREARRANGED ONLY.
Claire stared.
Daniel had written himself out of ordinary pickup.
May you like
Not because the daycare required it.
Because he had requested it.
