Chapter 12 - THE CHILD HE NEEDED DEAD
Grace began crying.
The sound changed the room.
Not because babies were evidence.
Because suddenly the entire trust structure had a face.
Victor stared.
“My daughter.”
Elena held her tighter.
“Do not.”
“I am her father.”
“Biologically.”
His face hardened.
“That matters.”
“Yes.”
“So does trying to kill her before she was born.”
“I did not.”
Victor turned toward the detectives.
“I want counsel.”
Smart.
Finally.
He stopped talking.
But before police moved, Owen handed one detective the estate memo.
Victor had requested a beneficiary-impact analysis six months before Elena’s disappearance.
The memo included one highlighted line:
If Elena dies before live birth, spouse retains temporary voting authority.
Another:
If live child survives, voting rights transfer outside spouse control.
Victor’s handwritten note:
Timing problem.
The detective looked at him.
Victor said nothing.
Serena stared.
“Timing problem?”
Victor’s attorney was not there yet.
He knew better than to answer.
Then another board member spoke from the crowd.
“I received a trust-model request from Victor two weeks before Elena disappeared.”
Victor looked at him sharply.
The man continued.
“He asked whether the vote could be accelerated if she was presumed dead before the child’s birth date.”
The room changed again.
Victor still had defenses.
Business planning.
Estate contingency.
No direct proof.
But the story was getting narrower.
Then one detective asked Elena:
“Why did you hide instead of reporting immediately?”
Victor looked at her.
This was his strongest point.
Elena answered honestly.
“Because I was afraid he would find me before I could prove anything.”
The detective waited.
“And because?”
Elena looked at Owen.
Then Grace.
“And because I wanted my daughter born before anyone could use the trust to decide whether she mattered.”
Victor smiled faintly.
There.
He saw an opening.
“You hid for money.”
Elena stared.
Then Owen handed the detective one final document.
A letter Elena had signed at the clinic the day after Grace was born.
It renounced Elena’s personal right to vote Grace’s trust shares and requested an independent trustee.
Victor’s smile disappeared.
