Chapter 14 - THE MAN BEHIND THE MONEY
Martin Hale was sixty-four.
Victor’s uncle.
Chief financial officer of Hale Holdings for thirty years.
He had spent the party quietly drinking near the back.
By the time Elena looked for him, he was gone.
Owen pulled old trust files.
The fifty-million-dollar policy had been created four years earlier.
Official purpose:
Estate liquidity protection.
But the beneficiary mechanics were strange.
Why did Victor receive so much if Elena died before childbirth?
Why did temporary voting authority move through him?
Martin had drafted the structure.
Victor later reviewed it.
Maybe Victor saw an opportunity someone else created.
Or maybe the opportunity had always been intended.
The detectives issued a request for Martin’s financial records.
Victor remained under investigation.
Serena formally ended her relationship with him through counsel.
Hale Holdings suspended him as CEO pending review.
Not conviction.
Suspension.
Victor’s attorney released a statement:
Mr. Hale categorically denies harming his wife. The evidence confirms only that he was present during a tragic fall and attempted to save her. Mrs. Hale’s prolonged concealment and staged public reappearance raise serious questions that will be addressed through lawful process.
Strong.
Elena read it twice.
Then turned off the television.
She did not need the public to declare her winner that night.
She needed the evidence to survive scrutiny.
A week later, forensic analysts recovered location data from Victor’s watch.
At 9:22 p.m., he walked from the gate to the overlook.
At 9:47, he stood motionless near the edge for three minutes.
After Elena fell.
Three minutes.
No 911 call.
No attempt to descend.
Victor called Serena first.
Then emergency services.
That mattered.
A lot.
Then Serena’s archived phone records confirmed the call.
Duration:
One minute, twelve seconds.
Police asked what Victor said.
Serena answered:
“It’s done.”
The same words.
Victor’s attorney argued they referred to the marriage.
Possible.
Then investigators found Martin Hale’s transfer file.
One transaction:
$2.5 million payable to Victor upon “successful estate stabilization.”
Date scheduled:
Ten days after Elena’s presumed death declaration.
Elena stared at the page.
Victor had a second financial incentive.
And Martin had promised it.
The conspiracy might be larger than one husband at a cliff.
Then police finally arrested Victor on charges related to aggravated assault, attempted homicide investigation, insurance fraud conspiracy, and evidence manipulation.
As they led him away, Victor looked at Elena.
Not apologetic.
Not afraid.
Almost angry.
“You have no idea what your father built.”
Elena froze.
Victor smiled slightly.
