Chapter 9 - THE STORY VICTOR BUILT

Victor dragged Serena into the hall.
Not violently enough to injure her.
Firmly enough to remind her who controlled the moment.
“Stay with me.”
She pulled away.
“No.”
Downstairs, Victor walked into the center of the ballroom.
The gate footage froze behind him.
He looked at the guests.
Then laughed.
“You’re all being manipulated.”
His voice was steady.
That was Victor’s gift.
Chaos entered a room.
He renamed it.
“This footage shows exactly what I told police. Elena and I argued. I followed her because I was trying to stop her.”
Owen stood near the bar.
“That is not what your first statement says.”
Victor looked at him.
“My first statement was given after twelve hours of shock.”
Reasonable.
Then Victor turned toward the guests.
“My wife had threatened to destroy this company. She had become obsessed with inheritance litigation.”
He raised his phone.
Messages appeared on the screen.
Elena’s angry texts.
I’ll burn the whole company down.
I’ll destroy everything before I let you take Dad’s shares.
Guests read.
Some faces shifted.
Victor continued.
“If Elena is alive, then ask yourselves why she has hidden for three months.”
Good question.
A dangerous one.
Then:
“Why return tonight instead of going to police?”
Another.
“Why stage lights, hidden footage, and theatrics at a corporate event?”
The room changed.
Elena watched from the upper level.
Owen had warned her.
Victor would turn survival into conspiracy.
He was doing it perfectly.
Then Victor looked up toward the balcony.
“If you’re here, Elena, come down.”
Silence.
“Tell everyone where you’ve been.”
Elena stepped into view.
Gasps.
Serena covered her mouth.
Victor stared.
Even expecting it, he looked shaken.
Elena walked down the stairs slowly.
No ghost now.
No game.
At the bottom, Victor spoke first.
“You hid our child from me.”
There.
He knew Grace existed.
Elena stopped.
Nobody had told him.
Owen’s face changed.
Serena looked at Victor.
“How do you know there’s a child?”
Victor realized the mistake.
One second too late.
May you like
Elena smiled without warmth.
“Good question.”
