Chapter 10 - THE ALLERGEN REVIEW

Emily contacted an attorney after learning about the joint savings.

Not to destroy Vanessa’s company.

To understand what had happened.

The attorney separated the issues.

Marriage:

unauthorized joint-financial decision.

Personal conduct:

nonconsensual food exposure.

Business:

allergen-control complaint and manufacturer investigation.

Different questions.

Emily did not post online.

Did not threaten retailers.

Did not contact Vanessa’s customers.

The manufacturer and retailer already had their own processes.

Maribel & Co. hired an independent food-safety consultant.

The consultant reviewed:

production scheduling,

cleaning records,

label controls,

supplier documentation,

and complaint handling.

The conclusion was not:

Vanessa poisoned customers.

It was narrower.

Allergen cross-contact controls needed improvement, and the incomplete sanitation record could not be dismissed.

That was enough to pause one product line.

The consultant also said something Vanessa hated:

“You do not need to prove the customer’s body was wrong. You need to prove your process is right.”

That became the sentence she could not escape.

Vanessa later instituted a policy requiring customer-safety complaints to be logged before any internal debate about likely cause.

Why?

Because people are biased toward explanations that protect them.

The log forced sequence:

record first,

interpret second.

Emily found the policy almost funny.

It was the business version of what she had needed at dinner.

Her reaction should have been acknowledged before Daniel decided what it meant.
