Chapter 8 - THE DINNER SETUP

Vanessa brought dessert ingredients to the Carter house that evening.

Emily did not know the purpose.

Daniel said:

“Vanessa wants us to taste some new recipes.”

Emily asked:

“Mango?”

Vanessa answered too quickly.

“No.”

Emily trusted them.

That was the hardest fact afterward.

She did not inspect everything because she was eating in her own home with her husband.

The first bites seemed normal.

Then she noticed a familiar sweet smell.

She asked:

“What’s in this?”

Daniel said:

“Nothing you can’t eat.”

Emily stopped eating.

Vanessa watched her.

Not like a sister-in-law.

Like someone waiting for a result.

Then Daniel lifted the spoon.

And forced the experiment into the open.

Later, Vanessa would insist she thought Daniel was only going to “prove a point” verbally.

That was not true enough.

She had stayed.

Watched.

Laughed.

Curiosity had made her complicit before fear made her honest.

Vanessa’s slap became another uncomfortable part of Emily’s accountability.

She told the counselor later:

“I hit her.”

“Yes.”

“She deserved—”

Emily stopped herself.

The counselor waited.

Emily corrected:

“I was furious. That doesn’t make the slap necessary.”

The moment did not become equal to the mango exposure.

It was still her action.

Emily apologized once.

Vanessa accepted the apology without pretending the rest was erased.

Accountability did not need symmetry to be real.
