Chapter 9 - EMILY DOES NOT BECOME EVIDENCE
After Emily called for medical advice and followed her existing allergy plan, the reaction remained mild.
Coughing.
Facial redness.
Discomfort.
No severe respiratory distress.
No graphic emergency.
Daniel looked relieved.
That made Emily angrier.
“You’re happy.”
“No.”
“You are.”
“I’m relieved you’re okay.”
“Because I’m your wife?”
“Of course.”
“Or because you think this proves something?”
Daniel stopped.
Vanessa sat silently.
Emily looked at both.
“My body is not your product test.”
Daniel said:
“That’s not what I meant.”
“It’s what you did.”
That sentence ended the argument.
Because intent could not change the structure.
He had used her reaction as information without consent.
Then Emily asked:
“What were you going to tell the retailer?”
Daniel stared at her.
She understood from his silence that there had never even been a legitimate plan.
No retailer would accept:
My wife reacted mildly at dinner.
The “test” had never been evidence.
It had been reassurance for Daniel and Vanessa.
They wanted to feel safer without making the product safer.
Daniel tried once to argue that Emily had already eaten mango before he lifted the spoon.
“So forcing it toward you didn’t change anything.”
Emily stared at him.
“That is your defense?”
He heard himself.
Stopped.
The point was not dosage.
