Chapter 1 - THE ATM

The bank statement hit the table hard enough to rattle the wine glasses.

Claire looked down.

Then up.

Eleanor Bennett sat across from her in a gold evening gown, one manicured finger resting on the highlighted number.

“Starting next month, give us another fifteen hundred.”

Claire blinked.

“Excuse me?”

Vanessa Bennett leaned back in her chair and smiled.

“And I need money for my gala dress.”

Claire turned toward her.

“You’re twenty-eight.”

Vanessa shrugged.

“So?”

Nathan sat beside Claire in a dark suit, jaw already tight.

“Don’t start.”

Claire looked around the table.

Seven years.

Seven years of helping.

Eleanor’s taxes.

Vanessa’s emergencies.

Nathan’s payroll crisis.

The roof at the family house.

The foundation gala.

The mortgage bridge.

Always temporary.

Always urgent.

Always family.

Claire touched the statement.

“What exactly is the extra fifteen hundred for?”

Eleanor looked offended by the question.

“Household support.”

“Whose household?”

“Ours.”

Claire laughed once.

No humor.

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“You make more than Nathan.”

“That does not make you my dependent.”

Nathan’s hand tightened around his fork.

“Claire.”

She turned to him.

“No.”

His expression changed.

Claire continued.

“I’m not your ATM anymore.”

Nathan stood.

The first slap came so fast Claire never saw his hand move.

Her head snapped sideways.

Silence swallowed the table.

Claire touched her burning cheek.

Nathan pointed at her.

“Apologize to my mother.”

Claire looked at him.

“No.”

The second slap knocked her into the chair.

Then to the floor.

Nobody moved.

Vanessa looked down and laughed.

“Just apologize and keep paying.”

Eleanor’s voice was cold.

“Teach her her place.”

Claire pushed herself up.

Her lip was bleeding.

Nathan stepped closer.

“What the hell is so funny?”

Claire realized she was laughing.

Through tears.

Through shock.

Through something that finally felt like clarity.

“I finally understand.”

She pulled out her phone.

“I was never family.”

Nathan frowned.

Claire tapped the banking app.

“I was your ATM.”

Then she canceled the recurring Bennett family transfer.

Nathan’s phone buzzed instantly with the notification.

His face changed.

Claire smiled.

“And the ATM is closed.”

Nathan raised his hand again.

Claire caught his wrist.

The room gasped.

She tightened her grip.

“Try that again.”

For the first time in seven years, Nathan looked afraid of her.

Then Eleanor said something Claire did not expect.

“If she stops the transfer, the covenant fails.”

May you like

Claire slowly turned.

“What covenant?”
