Chapter 14 - THE FIRST DATE
Nathan’s answer was almost disappointing.
“Because Vanessa canceled.”
Claire blinked.
“What?”
Years earlier, Eleanor had invited Nathan and Vanessa to the museum benefit.
Vanessa had another event.
Nathan went alone.
Eleanor pointed Claire out.
Nathan remembered the warning about “financial marriages” and nearly avoided her out of spite.
Then Claire spilled champagne on him.
Not the other way around.
They laughed.
Talked for two hours.
He asked for her number.
No plan.
No arrangement.
No secret contract.
The relationship had started honestly.
Claire sat with that.
She had half expected a final proof that every year was fake.
Instead, she got something harder.
The beginning had been real.
The corruption came later.
Then Nathan said:
“That night is why I kept telling myself we were still us.”
Claire looked at him.
“We stopped being us when you decided my no was negotiable.”
He nodded.
No argument.
Their divorce finalized the next week.
No public spectacle. No dramatic signature. Just paperwork.
Then Claire moved into a new apartment overlooking the river.
For the first time in years, no recurring Bennett transfer sat in her banking schedule.
She opened the app.
Nothing.
No $5,500.
No $7,000.
No gala expense.
No family emergency.
Silence.
She expected joy.
Instead, grief.
Generosity had been part of how she loved.
Now she worried helping anyone would feel dangerous.
Rachel told her:
“Boundaries are not the opposite of generosity.”
Claire wanted to believe that.
Then the Bennett Foundation sent an invitation.
Annual gala.
Vanessa was no longer chair.
Independent committee.
No family reimbursement for clothing.
Claire laughed.
She declined.
Then Eleanor sent a handwritten note.
No demand.
No money.
Just:
I did not understand the difference between what you could give and what we had the right to ask.
Claire read it twice.
Still no apology for the dinner.

Then her phone buzzed.
The forensic accountant had one final discovery.
A transfer from Claire’s father, Thomas Hale, to Bennett House Group.
