Chapter 10 - THE SON WHO FINALLY SAID NO

Eleanor called Nathan disloyal.

At the board meeting.

In front of everyone.

“You would sell your father’s property because your wife is angry?”

Nathan looked exhausted.

“No. Because the numbers say sell.”

Claire said nothing.

Eleanor turned to her.

“This is what you wanted.”

Claire answered:

“I wanted you to stop spending my money before asking.”

Eleanor’s face hardened.

Then Nathan voted for the independent refinancing.

Oakbrook sale.

Distribution cuts.

No Claire support assumption.

No retroactive acknowledgment.

The deal passed.

Eleanor lost control of the financing structure.

But Nathan did not save himself.

The board still investigated his conduct.

Then Nathan requested one conversation with Claire under attorney supervision.

He looked thinner.

The arrogance from dinner was gone.

“I was wrong.”

Claire waited.

“About hitting me?”

“Yes.”

“About my money?”

“Yes.”

“About the signature?”

He swallowed.

“Yes.”

Three yeses.

No excuse yet.

Then:

“I kept thinking I’d fix the company and repay everything before you ever felt it.”

Claire almost smiled.

“You thought if the outcome was good, consent stopped mattering.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“That sounds bad.”

“It is bad.”

He nodded.

Then Claire asked:

“Why did you hit me?”

Silence.

Long.

Finally:

“Because when you said the money stopped, I heard everything collapsing.”

“That is not why.”

He looked at her.

Claire continued:

“You hit me because you thought fear would put the money back.”

Nathan looked away.

That was the truth he did not want.

Then he said:

“I’m sorry.”

Claire did not answer.

Afterward Rachel asked:

“Did it help?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Claire laughed.

Then the board ruling arrived.

Nathan would be removed as CEO of Bennett House Group.

Not permanently banned.

He could remain a non-executive shareholder after a cooling-off period.

His legitimate equity stayed.

His bonus tied to the disputed refinancing was canceled.

The company would hire professional management.

Nathan had lost the throne.

Then Eleanor filed a challenge.

May you like

She claimed Claire had manipulated the board through marital leverage and threatened to withdraw the Bennett Family Trust properties from the company network.

If she succeeded, the clean refinancing could still collapse.
