Chapter 11 - JESSICA'S CASE
Jessica was charged with attempted murder and related assault offenses after prosecutors concluded the evidence supported intent to cause death or catastrophic harm.
Her defense argued:
crime of passion,
no weapon,
no explicit written plan,
Harrison’s manipulation,
emotional destabilization.
The state answered:
she deliberately pushed a mobility-impaired woman down stairs;
knew Elena could not use her legs;
knew another fall could cause severe injury;
did not attempt rescue;
and had made prior statements about Elena disappearing.
Harrison testified.
That was brutal.
Jessica looked at him and asked through counsel:
“You told me you loved me?”
“Yes.”
“You told me Elena was only a responsibility?”
“Yes.”
“You told me you couldn’t leave while she needed you?”
“Yes.”
“You told me you wanted a future with me?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“So you lied to me.”
Harrison answered:
“Yes.”
The courtroom went quiet.
Jessica’s attorney wanted the jury to see manipulation.
It worked.
But manipulation was not permission for murder.
Then the prosecutor asked:
“Did Mr. Carter ever tell you to hurt Elena?”
“No.”
“Did he ever ask you to push her wheelchair?”
“No.”
“Whose hands were on the chair?”
Jessica looked down.
“Mine.”
That line mattered.
Accountability found its boundary.
Harrison’s betrayal could explain the emotional environment.
Jessica still made the violent choice.
Then a plea offer came.
Substantial prison time.
No theatrical life sentence.
Jessica accepted after the judge ruled key messages admissible.
Elena did not attend sentencing.
