Chapter 3 - NOW LEARN YOURS

Four large men in dark suits stormed into the kitchen.
They were employees of Calder Protective Services.
Licensed.
Body cameras active.
Police already called.
Daniel jumped up.
“WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?!”
Two men grabbed him.
Another moved to Linda.
The fourth secured Harold when he tried to reach a drawer beside the dining cabinet.
Daniel struggled wildly.
“GET OFF ME!”
Linda screamed.
“CLAIRE! DO SOMETHING!”
Claire slowly stood.
Her hand burned.
Her knee hurt from the fall.
Her face felt wet.
Then something inside her changed.
She looked at the stove.
Then at all three Bennetts.
The security team leader, Marcus Vale, pulled Daniel backward when Daniel tried to kick free.
Marcus was forty-three, a former corporate-security supervisor with the expression of a man who disliked surprises.
He had met Claire only once.
During intake, he had asked:
“What exactly are you afraid your husband will do?”
Claire had hated the question because she did not know.
Yell?
Block a doorway?
Take her phone?
Threaten her?
She had not imagined the stove.
Marcus had written:
UNKNOWN ESCALATION RISK.
Now, seeing Claire on the floor, he reacted too personally.
That would become important later.
He pulled Daniel away from Claire, then used the stove-side counter to pin him into a controllable position.
Harold shouted:
“This is my house!”
Marcus answered:
“Then stop resisting in it.”
Linda tried to slap one of the guards.
He caught her wrist.
The room became chaos.
Claire saw how quickly protection could turn into domination when everyone believed fear justified force.
That was why, when Marcus pushed Daniel’s arm toward the burner, Claire understood instantly what had to happen.
In the confusion, Daniel ended up near the stove.
Harold too.
Linda fought against the guard holding her.
Then Marcus did something Claire had not ordered.
He forced Daniel’s arm forward.
Another guard did the same with Harold.
Linda’s hand hovered near the heat.
Daniel panicked.
“CLAIRE! PLEASE!”
Claire stepped closer.
“You wanted me to learn my place?”
Linda began sobbing.
Claire stared at their trembling hands.
“Now learn yours.”
Marcus started lowering Daniel’s hand.
Claire raised her own injured hand.
“STOP.”
Immediate.
Marcus stopped.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“That’s as close as you get.”
Then to Linda.
“No one touches the stove.”
Sirens approached.
Daniel stared.
Claire stepped nearer.
“This was never revenge.”
She pointed at the active body cameras.
“It was witnesses.”
Harold’s face changed.
That was the moment he finally became afraid.
Not of heat.
Of documentation.
Then police entered.
May you like
Claire lifted both hands.
And the cream-colored folder still sat open on the table.
