Chapter 2 - THE MONEY AT THE PRISON GATE

Six years later, Claire walked through the release gate carrying everything she owned in a clear plastic bag.
Two books.
Letters.
A cheap watch.
The court papers she had read until the folds split.
No one waited with flowers.
Good.
She did not want them.
Then she saw Owen Mercer.
Charcoal coat.
Older face.
Same nervous hands.
He stood beside a black sedan.
Claire stopped.
“No.”
Owen swallowed.
“Claire—”
“No.”
“Mr. Caldwell asked me to—”
“I don’t care.”
He opened the trunk.
A suitcase sat inside.
Then another.
He lifted one onto the pavement and opened it.
Cash.
Bundled.
Stacks.
Claire stared.
“How much?”
“Two million.”
She laughed.
Owen looked miserable.
“He said it’s yours.”
“Mine?”
“He said no conditions.”
Claire looked at the money.
Then at Owen.
“He thinks this buys six years?”
“No.”
“Then why cash?”
Owen hesitated.
That was answer enough.
Claire reached into her bag and pulled out a lighter she had bought with her release money at the bus station kiosk outside processing.
Owen’s eyes widened.
“Claire.”
Click.
Flame.
“Wait.”
Claire took one bundle from the top.
Held the flame against the paper band.
Owen panicked.
“Claire, WAIT!”
The corner caught.
She dropped the burning bundle into the open metal luggage tray at his feet, then pushed the suitcase away from herself.
“Tell Graham…”
Owen froze.
Claire’s voice went cold.
“…the woman he knew died in that prison.”
She turned.
Then Owen shouted:
“He knows you didn’t take the money!”
Claire stopped.
The flame hissed against the metal insert.
Owen stamped it out.
Claire slowly turned around.
“What did you say?”
His face had gone pale.
“I said he knows.”
Claire walked back.
Every step deliberate.
“How long?”
Owen looked toward the car.
“Not here.”
She grabbed his coat.
“How long, Owen?”
He whispered:
“Four years.”
Claire released him.
For a moment, the world became silent.
Four years.
Graham had known she was innocent while she was still serving her sentence.
Claire looked at the suitcase.
May you like
Then at Owen.
“Drive.”
