Chapter 7 - THE ROOM WITH THE SECOND MICROPHONE

Owen found the first microphone under the table.

Claire found the second inside a decorative lamp.

Vanessa had recorded the meeting.

Why?

To capture Graham admitting Aster existed.

Admitting he withheld evidence.

Admitting he chose company protection over Claire.

Blackmail insurance.

Graham finally looked frightened in a way Claire had never seen.

“She’ll release it.”

Claire said:

“Good.”

He stared.

“You don’t understand.”

“No. You don’t.”

She stepped closer.

“Your empire is not a human life support system.”

“Twenty thousand people work for Caldwell.”

“And one woman went to prison because all of you kept saying the number was bigger than her.”

Graham looked away.

Then Claire had an idea.

“Let her think she has the recording.”

Owen stared.

“What?”

Claire removed the microphone carefully.

“Put it back.”

Graham frowned.

She explained.

If Vanessa believed the room remained compromised, she might act quickly.

Move money.

Contact Voss.

Destroy records.

Pressure Graham.

Movement created evidence.

Graham looked at Claire.

“You want to bait her.”

“I want her to stop having six years to plan.”

Then Claire set terms.

She would not help Graham save the company.

She would help expose who framed her.

If that damaged Caldwell Meridian, so be it.

Graham agreed.

Too quickly.

Claire noticed.

“What else?”

He hesitated.

Then admitted Vanessa had recently moved $11 million from a private family holding account into a Cayman trust.

Not Foundation money.

Graham’s personal family funds.

He believed she forged authorization.

Claire laughed.

“Now that she steals from you, suddenly truth matters.”

Graham flinched.

Correct.

Then Owen received a text.

From Vanessa.

MEET ME. ALONE.

He showed Claire.

She smiled.

“Go.”

Owen went to a private club.

He wore a recording device authorized by investigators Claire had quietly contacted through a post-conviction attorney that afternoon.

Vanessa arrived.

No panic.

Elegant.

Smug.

She asked:

“Did Claire take the money?”

Owen frowned.

“What money?”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Then:

“The release payment.”

Owen said no.

Vanessa smiled.

“Good.”

“Why good?”

“Because angry people are predictable.”

Owen waited.

Vanessa continued:

“She’ll go after Graham.”

Then:

“And Graham will finally do what he should’ve done six years ago.”

“What?”

“Destroy her.”

Owen’s stomach tightened.

Then Vanessa added:

“Unless she finds the Mercer file.”

Owen froze.

His own last name.

“What file?”

May you like

Vanessa smiled.

“You really never knew why Graham hired you?”
