Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN THE WATER RETURNED
Claire struck the Pacific feet-first and slightly turned.
The impact fractured her pelvis, dislocated one shoulder, and drove the breath from her body. Cold water closed above her. For several seconds, there was no sky, no helicopter, and no clear sense of which direction led upward.
An automatic flotation belt worn for the overwater flight inflated when its water sensor activated. The compact bladder dragged her toward the surface. It did not make the fall safe. It kept an unconscious woman from sinking immediately.
The research vessel Pacific Lantern was less than half a mile away.
Its crew had been collecting water samples along the cliffs when marine biologist Dr. Nora Hale saw something fall from the helicopter. At first she thought it was luggage. Then an orange emergency bladder appeared between the waves.
The crew transmitted a Mayday and launched a rigid inflatable boat.
Claire was in the water for six minutes.
She had no pulse when deck medic Aaron Bell pulled her aboard. After resuscitation, she began breathing weakly. Nora noticed the pregnancy beneath Claire's soaked clothing and redirected the Coast Guard helicopter to the nearest trauma center with maternal-fetal surgery.
Above them, Ethan told pilot Mason Reed that Claire had panicked, unfastened her harness, and jumped.
Mason had been focused on the controls during the final seconds. He saw Claire leave the aircraft in his peripheral vision but did not see Ethan's hands. Ethan ordered him to return to the private landing pad rather than circle.
“There is a vessel below,” Mason said.
“They'll handle it.”
Ethan called 911 only after they landed.
At the hospital, surgeons stabilized Claire's internal bleeding. Her twenty-nine-week pregnancy was in danger from placental separation and oxygen loss. Doctors delayed delivery while monitoring the fetus minute by minute.
Ethan arrived with attorney Colin Voss and a folder of Claire's psychiatric records. He told police she had suffered prenatal depression, panic attacks, and irrational fears about him. He claimed she opened the door herself during a sightseeing pass.
The helicopter's flight log showed it had descended to one hundred and eighteen feet above the water shortly before Claire fell. Ethan said the descent was for photography.
That height explained how she survived. It did not make survival likely or the injuries minor.
After fourteen hours, Claire opened her eyes.
Detective Maya Ortiz asked who unfastened the harness.
Claire tried to speak through the oxygen mask.
Her swollen fingers moved against the sheet.
