Chapter 3 - SHE JUMPED, HE SAID
Ethan's defense began before Claire could sit upright.
Colin Voss released a statement describing a tragic mental-health crisis. He asked the public not to “criminalize a husband who witnessed the unbearable.” Ethan obtained an emergency order limiting direct contact with Claire, claiming detectives were pressuring her while she was medicated.
The psychiatric records were genuine.
Claire had begun therapy four months earlier after waking from recurring nightmares. She reported anxiety, insomnia, and fears that something was wrong with Ethan's coastal-development company. Her therapist, Dr. Evelyn Shaw, recorded that Claire sometimes questioned whether pregnancy had made her paranoid.
One note said, Patient fears husband may harm her but offers no concrete threat.
Another said, Patient acknowledges intrusive image of falling into ocean.
Ethan's lawyers called that image suicidal ideation.
Dr. Shaw disagreed. Claire had described a nightmare, not an intention. But Ethan attended two sessions and told the therapist Claire had become unstable. His statements were included in the chart.
The flight evidence was incomplete. The helicopter had a cockpit camera, but no cabin-facing camera. Its internal audio system was disabled. Mason said Claire appeared distressed before takeoff and argued with Ethan during the flight. He did not see the shove.
Nora saw the fall from too far away to identify who caused it.
The automatic flotation belt complicated Ethan's story. Claire had fastened it correctly at takeoff, showing some attention to safety. His expert argued a suicidal person could still act impulsively later.
Then Claire underwent emergency surgery.
Her daughter's heart rate dropped and did not recover. The baby was delivered by cesarean section at twenty-nine weeks, weighing less than three pounds. She was placed on respiratory support in neonatal intensive care.
Claire named her Hope.
For two days, doctors could not promise either mother or child would survive.
Ethan petitioned for temporary medical authority over the newborn as Hope's father. Claire objected from her hospital bed. The family court appointed an independent guardian instead of giving either parent sole control.
Ethan portrayed the decision as proof Claire was incapable.
Detective Ortiz asked what secret Ethan mentioned before pushing her.
Claire said it concerned the Pacific Renewal Fund, a private-public program financing shoreline restoration after wildfires and erosion. She had inherited the fund's controlling charitable interest from her father. Ethan's company managed construction.
Three weeks before the flight, Claire discovered payments to a contractor called Blue Meridian Coastal.
