Chapter 7 - THE PASSWORD SHE GAVE HIM
Claire authenticated the insurance change on her own phone.
She remembered Ethan asking her to confirm an updated emergency contact. She entered her password and facial identification while he held the screen. The visible page contained familiar names. Forensic analysis found a remote session layered over the application, allowing a different form to receive her authentication.
The technique was deceptive, but Claire had repeatedly allowed Ethan to direct sensitive approvals.
“I thought trust meant not making him prove everything,” she told the fund's civil investigator.
“Trust does not eliminate fiduciary duty,” the investigator replied.
Claire agreed to repay compensation she received while the false invoices passed, even though she had not taken Blue Meridian money. A court-appointed monitor took control of the fund. She would not return simply because she survived.
Ethan's criminal defense became more aggressive. He admitted the Blue Meridian fraud through intermediaries but denied trying to kill Claire. His lawyers proposed that she discovered her own legal exposure, experienced a panic episode, and jumped. They offered a guilty plea on financial charges if prosecutors dropped attempted murder.
The state refused.
Mason pleaded guilty to aviation violations and obstruction for his first false statement. In exchange for truthful testimony, prosecutors recommended a reduced sentence. His cooperation was useful, not noble.
Redwood engineers recovered a hidden maintenance stream from the helicopter. The aircraft automatically recorded weight shifts to assist stabilization. Four seconds before Claire fell, cabin pressure sensors showed Ethan move from the opposite seat toward her. Claire's weight moved backward, then sharply toward the open door.
The pattern fit a struggle.
It did not show intention by itself.
Intent appeared in a deleted search recovered from Ethan's laptop: survival after fall into ocean 100 feet.
He had searched it six days before the flight.

Then investigators found the original query inside a folder containing Claire's trust amendment and life-insurance documents.
