Chapter 8 - THE SECRET ETHAN MEANT TO DROWN
Ethan had not pushed Claire solely for insurance or control of the fund.
Blue Meridian's records contained payments to county consultants who approved construction near protected cliffs. Some work had destabilized a slope above a public beach. An engineering report warned that a major collapse could occur during winter rain.
Ethan buried the report.
Claire discovered its existence and hired Nora to test the restoration area. If the report became public, Blue Meridian's fraud would become a public-safety scandal involving potential bribery and thousands of beach visitors.
That was the secret he believed the ocean could keep.
The investigation did not assume every consultant was corrupt. Two payments funded legitimate surveys. Three others passed through relatives' companies without documented work. Prosecutors charged only transactions supported by records.
The county closed the threatened beach and stabilized the slope before winter. The cost came from frozen Blue Meridian assets and an emergency public grant, later subject to restitution.
Ethan filed a motion to exclude Claire's account because pain medication and oxygen loss could distort memory. Neurologists agreed trauma sometimes affected recall. They also noted Claire had repeated the same core facts before learning about the trust amendment, life insurance, or recovered search history.
Her testimony would be tested, not presumed perfect.
During a supervised visit with Hope, Ethan asked the guardian to deliver Claire a message: if she described the fall as an accident, he would reveal every offshore account and return the money.
The guardian immediately reported the request.
Ethan called it a settlement proposal. Prosecutors called it attempted witness influence.
Hope left intensive care after seventy-nine days. She required oxygen at home and regular developmental monitoring. Doctors could not promise there would be no long-term effects.
Claire carried her daughter out of the hospital while still using a cane.
Reporters waited beyond the doors. She gave no triumphant statement.
The criminal trial was scheduled for spring.
