Chapter 12 - EMILY'S COPYCAT TRICK
Emily’s choice at the jewelry store became a problem too.
She had copied Lily’s innocent expression.
Moved evidence.
Put their father at risk.
Rebecca asked her:
“Would you do it again?”
Emily thought.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Dad could’ve gotten arrested.”
“Anything else?”
Emily frowned.
Then:
“I became her for a minute.”
That bothered her.
Lily manipulated evidence to control adults.

Different motive.
Same tool.
The therapist told her:
“Survival responses can still become habits if you reward them.”
Emily hated therapy language.
But understood.
She started practicing direct statements.

I know you won’t believe me.
Instead:
Check the camera.
Not:
She always lies.
Instead:
Here is what I saw.
Evidence without manipulation.
That became her strength.
Daniel began changing other things too.
He stopped making Emily supervise Lily automatically.
No more:
Take your sister with you.
Watch her while I run inside.
Help her finish that.
Emily was a sister.
Not a deputy parent.
At first Lily hated it.
She had grown used to Emily being responsible whenever something went wrong.
If Lily forgot a jacket, Emily should have reminded her.
If Lily lost a charger, Emily should have checked the room.
Daniel ended that.
Each girl carried her own things.
Each girl answered for her own choices.
The household became less efficient.
It also became fairer.
Emily noticed she was less angry when she was not constantly being assigned responsibility for someone who could accuse her later.
