Chapter 14 - THE APOLOGIES
Wade came alone.
He looked older.
The loss of money had stripped away some certainty.
He stood before Evelyn’s photograph.
“She hated me.”
Iris said:
“I don’t think she did.”
“She didn’t leave me anything.”
“That doesn’t mean hate.”
Wade laughed.
“Your mother would disagree.”
Then he apologized.
Not:
I’m sorry everything happened.
He said:
“I agreed to shame you into giving us money you never promised.”
Iris nodded.
“And I looked away when Laura hit you.”
He swallowed.
“I’m sorry.”
Iris accepted the apology.
Not the debt.
They did not become close immediately.
But a door reopened.
Richard apologized differently.
“I built plans around your character.”
Iris frowned.
He explained.
“I kept telling lenders you were good, loyal, loving.”
“That sounds nice.”
“It wasn’t.”
He looked down.
“I used your goodness as a guarantee.”
That was accurate.
Then:
“When Laura hurt you, I told you to obey because I thought the worst outcome was the family losing money.”
Iris stared.
“What was the worst outcome?”
“You learning we would hurt you to get it.”
Richard cried.
Iris did too.
Forgiveness remained uncertain.
Then Laura sent a written apology through counsel.
It said:
I thought motherhood meant I had invested in you.
Iris stopped reading for a moment.
Then:
I treated love like something with a return due at maturity.
That was the ledger.
The birthday.
Everything.
Then:
You did not owe me your inheritance for being my daughter.
Iris finished.
No reunion.
No immediate contact.
But finally:
the right sentence.

Laura accepted a plea.
