Chapter 6 - THE BRUISES BEFORE THE BIRTHDAY

The birthday assault was not the first physical incident.

The older bruises on Iris’s arms came from earlier confrontations.

Not years of constant beatings.

Recent escalation.

Six weeks before turning eighteen, Laura began asking:

“Have you heard from Evelyn’s lawyer?”

Iris had not.

Then:

“Any bank mail?”

“No.”

Then Laura started opening Iris’s mail “by accident.”

Iris objected.

Laura grabbed her upper arm.

Hard.

Left bruises.

Two weeks later, Richard confronted Iris about changing her email password.

He did not hit her.

But Laura did.

Another grab.

Another bruise.

At the time Iris thought her mother was simply becoming controlling about college.

Now she saw timing.

They were waiting for notice.

Then Grace explained why her office had struggled to contact Iris.

Three certified letters went to the family home.

All marked:

REFUSED.

Iris never saw them.

Two regular letters disappeared.

An email went to an address Laura had helped Iris create at thirteen.

The password had been changed.

Then Grace contacted Iris’s school counselor.

That finally worked.

Iris asked Richard:

“Did you refuse the letters?”

“No.”

Laura?

Silence.

Then police found unopened certified envelopes in Laura’s closet.

She had kept them.

Why?

Laura eventually said:

“I wanted us all there when she learned.”

Grace asked:

“Why refuse them?”

“So the lawyer wouldn’t get to her first.”

There it was.

The family needed to control the reveal.

Not because they feared fraud.

Because whoever explained the money first could define what Iris owed.

Then Iris remembered Laura’s birthday toast planned before the attack.

Family guests later described the first line written on a card beside the cake:

The inheritance confrontation had been scripted before the cane ever moved.
