Chapter 11 - CLAIRE'S RETURN TIMELINE
Claire had been alive the entire seventeen days.
Why did it take so long to get home?
After the rural hospital, she was transferred to a rehabilitation unit in Augusta because of her wrist fracture, concussion symptoms, and severe dehydration from the storm response.
She repeatedly identified herself.
Staff contacted authorities.
But law-enforcement databases still treated the aviation manifest as the primary casualty record.
The mismatch triggered identity verification.
Claire’s company finally confirmed her through:
employment records,
video call with executives,
and biometric passport records.
Then the insurer’s investigator learned.
By that point Claire had already left the hospital.
She chose not to call Diane again immediately.
Why?
Because a Coast Guard investigator told her:
“Your mother has been pushing an insurance claim.”
Claire did not believe him.
Then Grace obtained a copy of the claimant notice.
Five million dollars.
Claire spent two days meeting investigators before returning.
She wanted to see Diane’s reaction before Diane knew Claire had seen the claim.
That decision created the front-door moment.
Diane’s terror answered one question immediately.
When Claire returned home, she had already changed one thing.
She did not sleep there.
The living-room confrontation happened because she wanted to see Diane in person.
Afterward, Claire stayed with her friend Natalie.
Diane called repeatedly.
Claire answered once.
Diane said:
“I thought you were gone.”
Claire replied:
“You thought I might be alive.”
Silence.
“That’s the part I can’t get past.”
Diane started explaining the voicemail.
Claire stopped her.
“This is for lawyers now.”
She hung up.
It was the first time in her life she ended a conversation with Diane before Diane was finished.
