Chapter 4 - DIANE'S FIRST STATEMENT
Diane spoke with investigators on the morning after the crash.
She told the charter company:
“Claire called me before takeoff.”
True.
Claire had called from Gull Island before evacuation.
Diane told the Coast Guard:
“She said she was boarding.”
Almost true.
Claire’s exact words had been:
“They’re loading us now.”
Then Diane made the first important omission.
The Coast Guard asked:
“Any contact after departure?”
Diane said:
“No.”
That was false.
Claire’s voicemail had arrived the next morning.
Phone-company records later showed:
9:18 a.m.
Duration:
twenty-seven seconds.
Diane listened to it at:
9:26.
Then again at:
9:31.
At 10:04, she deleted it.
Why?
Diane later claimed she thought it was an old delayed voicemail.
Storm networks sometimes delivered messages late.
That was possible.
But the voicemail contained:
“I wasn’t on the plane.”
And:
“Call the Coast Guard number.”
Diane never called.
Instead, at 11:12 a.m., she contacted Claire’s life-insurance carrier.
Not to file a formal claim yet.
To ask:
“What happens if an insured person dies in an aviation disaster and no body is recovered?”
That timing would become the center of everything.
The phone-company records became even more important because Diane changed her story twice.
First interview:
“I received no calls after Claire boarded.”
Second:
“I may have received a garbled voicemail after the crash, but I thought it was delayed.”
Third, after records showed two playbacks:
“I listened because I desperately wanted it to be her.”
Lauren Pierce argued that evolving memory after trauma was normal.
Grace agreed in principle.
Then the investigators asked one narrow question.
“If you hoped the voicemail was Claire, why did you not preserve it?”
Diane answered:
“I didn’t want to hear it again.”
Possible.
“Why did you not call the number she gave?”
Diane said:
May you like
“I thought it would make everything worse.”
That answer became harder to fit inside grief alone.
