Chapter 14 - WHO SHE WAS

Months later Thane asked Alora about the line he shouted during the attack.

“Do you even know who she is?”

Alora smiled.

“It was dramatic.”

“I was terrified.”

“I know.”

Then:

“But you made me sound like Dad’s secret queen of the safe.”

Thane laughed.

“You kind of were.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I was the archivist.”

That distinction became important.

Her power had never come from status.

It came from:

documentation,

limited authority,

clear scope.

Corrine and Sloan believed control meant:

possession,

access,

family rank.

Alora understood control differently.

Custody without ownership.

Responsibility without entitlement.

Then Thane said:

“I think that’s why Dad picked you.”

“Because I’m boring?”

“Yes.”

She laughed.

Then he became serious.

“Because you can hold something valuable without needing it to become yours.”

That was the family lesson.

Harold himself had failed sometimes.

Corrine failed more dramatically.

Sloan followed what she learned.

Thane ignored warning signs.

No one came out flawless.

Then Alora gave birth to a healthy daughter.

They named her Mira.

Corrine was not present.

Sloan was not present.

No drama.

No grandmother screaming outside hospital doors.

Boundaries held.

Later, Corrine asked through counsel whether Mira would inherit any Sterling jewelry.

Alora laughed.

Thane did too.

Then he answered:

“She can decide whether she wants jewelry when she’s old enough to know it’s just jewelry.”

That sentence would have horrified his family once.

Now it felt like freedom.
