The jeweler was retired.
Martin Vale.
He remembered Corrine.
She brought an antique sapphire pendant.
Wanted the center stone removed.
Asked for a lower-value replacement.
Why?
“She said the original was going into secure storage.”
Did Martin question it?
“No.”
That is a normal enough request.
People travel with replicas.
Wear substitutes.
Protect heirlooms.
Martin returned the original sapphire loose in a gem pouch.
Corrine paid cash.
What happened to the original?
He did not know.
Then Laura found a consignment record four months later.
Seller name:
C. Vale.
Not Corrine.
Could be unrelated.
But bank deposit records showed Corrine received $41,000 around the same time.

Again, suspicious.
Not complete proof.
Then Corrine’s attorney produced an explanation.
She had sold a personal investment watch that month.
Documentation existed.
Could account for the deposit.
Good defense.
The case did not collapse into certainty.
Then Alora found another route.
Harold kept jewelry condition sheets.
The sapphire pendant’s original stone had a tiny feather inclusion at 4 o’clock.
The resale auction archive from eight years earlier showed a loose sapphire with:
same carat range,
same shape,
same uncommon inclusion pattern.
Could be the same stone.
A gemologist said:
“Consistent. Not definitive without laboratory match.”
Precision.
Then the auction consignor record became available under subpoena.

a private box rented by Corrine Sterling.
Thane looked at his mother.
She finally stopped denying that sale.
“I sold one stone.”
“Why?”
She said Harold had frozen her discretionary spending after an argument.
She needed money for Sloan’s school and household expenses.
Thane stared.
“School was paid.”
Corrine corrected.
“Other things.”
Then Alora asked:
“Why replace it?”
Corrine answered:
“Because your father would have turned it into a war.”
There it was.
The substitution was not theft in her mind.
