Chapter 13 - THE CONSEQUENCES
Margaret received:
probation,
community-service requirements,
financial penalties,
restitution related to investigative and insurance consequences,
and a no-contact period with Claire except through counsel.
Her assault conviction remained.
The insurance-fraud-related conduct had its own consequences.
No prison fantasy.
No mansion seizure spectacle.
She sold a vacation property to resolve much of the debt.
Charles signed a structured repayment agreement.
Daniel refused to cover it.
Bennett Family Holdings recovered improperly described withdrawals through civil settlement.
Claire did not receive millions.
She received compensation tied to actual harm:
medical expenses,
therapy,
lost work,
and civil resolution of the assault and false accusation.
The baby remained healthy.
That fact did not erase what happened.
Then Margaret asked through counsel whether she could attend the birth.
Claire laughed once.
“No.”
Daniel agreed.
Margaret wrote:
But I’m the grandmother.
Claire replied through Grace:
Biology does not create access after violence.
No argument.
Then the family began asking whether Margaret would see the baby later.
Claire hated that the question arrived before birth.
Her therapist said:
“You do not need to decide forever today.”
So Claire decided:
Not now.
That was enough.
Then Daniel found the last missing piece.
The $18,000 temporary diamond Victor removed from the ring during the staged theft.
Where was it?
Margaret claimed she discarded it.
Victor said he left it with her.
Police never found it.
Then Charles called Daniel.
“I know where it is.”
He had it.
Margaret gave it to him the night before accusing Claire.
Why?
“Collateral.”
“For what?”
