Claire’s medical recovery became its own storyline.
The baby remained stable.
The bleeding stopped.
She continued frequent monitoring.
Doctors refused to promise zero risk.
That uncertainty changed her.
Every tightening sensation frightened her.
Every quiet hour made her count movement.
Margaret’s assault did not produce a dramatic emergency delivery.
Reality was slower.

Appointments.
Fear.
Daniel attended everything.
At first he hovered.
Claire snapped:
“Stop asking me every two minutes if I’m okay.”
He backed off.
Later she apologized.
Then corrected herself.
“No. I’m not sorry for needing space.”
Daniel nodded.

Then Margaret sent a letter through counsel.
I never meant to hurt the baby.
Claire stared.
The sentence enraged her.

I assaulted you.

I did not intend the worst possible consequence.
Claire refused to respond.
Then the prosecutor’s office discussed potential charges.
Assault.
False reporting.
Insurance-related offenses.
Attempted fraud depending on evidence.
The exact legal theory remained under review.
No one called it attempted murder.
No one claimed Margaret intended fetal harm.
Precision mattered.
Then the insurer denied the theft claim.
Reason:
material misrepresentation and evidence of prior stone disposition.
Margaret’s financial problem worsened.
The lender still wanted payment.
Charles could not cover it.
Daniel asked Claire:
“Do you want me to help her?”
Claire looked at him.
“Financially?”
“Yes.”
“Do you?”
“I don’t know.”
That answer mattered.
Claire did not want revenge to require Daniel abandoning his mother completely.
But if he paid her debt without boundaries, he could erase consequences.
Then Grace found one more hidden account.
Margaret had already received $50,000 from someone.
Daniel stared.
