Chapter 14 - THE LETTER TO EMILY

Thomas’s letter was short.

Em—

If you are reading this, then history has become inconvenient again.

Do not defend me because I am your father.

I was right about Northline and wrong about some people I blamed while angry.

Robert was wrong to delay the truth and right that the command faced real consequences.

We both wanted to be the man history forgave.

That is vanity.

The people in those housing units did not care which of us won.

They cared whether the wiring worked.

Emily stopped reading and cried.

Then continued.

If the Parker family ever makes you choose between belonging and telling the truth, remember that belonging which requires silence is only rented.

And if Daniel is standing beside you, make him speak.

If he will not, do not speak for him.

Emily laughed through tears.

Her father had somehow reached directly into the marriage.

Then one final line:

Service is not a name on a wall. It is who is safer because you were there.

Emily folded the letter.

That afternoon she returned to the center.

Victoria was in the lobby speaking with donors.

Not commanding.

Working.

The new historical panel stood nearby.

A group of young officers were reading it.

No one fainted.

No one tore down Robert’s portrait.

No one called Thomas a traitor.

The truth had entered the building.

It remained standing.

Victoria came over.

“Your father would enjoy this too much.”

Emily smiled.

“Probably.”

Then Victoria looked at the plaque.

“I spent years thinking one correction would erase Robert.”

“Did it?”

“No.”

She sounded annoyed by the answer.

Then she said:

“I was cruel to you.”

Emily looked at her.

“Yes.”

“I thought if you stayed peripheral, the history would too.”

“Yes.”

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

Victoria almost smiled.

That was as close to honest peace as they could manage.

Then Daniel entered the lobby.

No uniform.

He stopped several feet away.

“Can we talk?”

Emily looked at Thomas’s letter in her hand.

Make him speak.

She nodded.

“Talk.”

May you like

Daniel took a breath.

And this time, he did not lower his eyes.
