Chapter 6 - THE REPORTERS
The ceremony clip spread quickly.
Reporters camped outside the center.
Emily hated seeing revenge packaged as entertainment.
Then one outlet published a harsher story:
BENNETT FAMILY MONEY ATTEMPTS TO REWRITE PARKER MILITARY LEGACY.

Anonymous Parker Foundation adviser.
Victoria denied authorizing it.
Emily believed her.
The foundation had its own loyalists now.
That mattered.
Then Colonel Whitmore faced scrutiny too.
Old emails showed he had supported delaying the Northline investigation for several weeks.
A reporter asked:
“Why should anyone trust your version now?”
Whitmore answered publicly:
“You shouldn’t trust my version. Read the record.”
Emily respected that.
Then one document damaged Thomas.
His initial disclosure accused two officers who were later cleared.
He had been angry and imprecise.
Victoria seized on it.
“Your father ruined careers.”
Emily read the IG record.
Thomas later apologized in writing to one wrongly suspected officer.
Emily did not hide it.
At a press briefing she said:
“My father was right about the contractor and wrong about some people he accused. Both belong in the history.”
That changed the tone.
She was not building a saint.
She was building a record.
Then Daniel received orders from his commanding office.
Because the dispute had become public, he was instructed to avoid using rank or uniform in foundation advocacy.
Appropriate.
Victoria called it humiliating.
Daniel said:
“No. It’s professional.”
Another small break from her.
Then Rachel found something more serious.
The Parker Foundation had paid $640,000 over six years to Heritage Strategies, a consulting firm run by one of Victoria’s oldest friends.
Services included:
Donor positioning.
Legacy narrative.
Historical communications.
Not illegal.
But Heritage Strategies had also lobbied the center’s board to remove Thomas Bennett’s name from preliminary materials before the endowment agreement was disclosed.
Emily stared.
“So she tried to erase Dad again.”
Rachel corrected her.
“Victoria’s consultant did.”
“Under whose direction?”
“That’s what we need to prove.”
Then an email surfaced.
Victoria to Heritage Strategies:
The Bennett condition cannot become the public identity of this project. Solve naming before dedication.
Emily read it slowly.
Victoria had not expected Whitmore to unveil the plaque.
