Chapter 10 - THE GRANDPARENT CASE THAT WASN'T
Margaret hired a lawyer.
Claire panicked when the letter arrived.
Then read it carefully.
It did not say:
I am taking custody.
It requested:
structured grandparent contact and mediation.
Margaret’s lawyer argued:
she had been a major caregiver after Michael’s death,
Ethan had a meaningful bond with her,
and abrupt cutoff could harm him.
Those were not absurd points.
Claire’s attorney said:
“Do not overreact.”
“She hit him.”
“Yes.”
“That should end it.”
“It may justify restrictions. It does not erase the relationship history.”
Claire hated that.
Then understood.
Ethan had loved Margaret.
Before the rules became frightening, they:
baked cookies,
built model trains,
watched baseball,
visited the cemetery together.
Claire did not need to pretend those years were fake.
Mediation did not begin immediately.
First:
child therapist.
Safety assessment.
No unsupervised contact.
No physical discipline.
Clear.
Boring.
Necessary.
The child therapist recommended no forced reconciliation.
Margaret hated the phrase.
“I’m his grandmother.”
“Yes.”
“He loves me.”
“Probably.”
“Then why can’t I see him?”
“Because love does not cancel fear.”
Margaret looked wounded.
The therapist continued:
“And fear does not cancel love.”
That stopped her.
Ethan could miss:
model trains,
baseball,
cookies,
and Margaret’s stories
while still not feeling safe alone with her.
Both truths were allowed.
Claire’s attorney also warned against using the switch incident as leverage for unrelated financial issues.
Michael had left a small education account for Ethan.
Margaret was successor contact if Claire died.
Claire’s first angry instinct was:
Remove Margaret from everything.
The attorney said:
“Review roles calmly.”
Some changes made sense.
Others did not need immediate action.
Claire replaced Margaret as emergency school pickup.
Changed house access.
Paused unsupervised contact.

But she did not rewrite every estate document overnight.
Fear can produce overcorrection too.
