“Conflict.”
“With Margaret?”
“With everyone.”
After Michael died, Claire feared one more rupture.
If Margaret criticized bedtime:
let it go.
Food:
let it go.
Screen time:
let it go.
Prayer at dinner:
let it go.
Cemetery visits Ethan did not want:
let it go.
Each issue seemed too small to fight over.
Collectively they changed Ethan’s home.
Claire cried when she admitted that.
“I thought I was keeping the family together.”
“You were postponing disagreement.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
Same thing she had told herself for eighteen months.
