Chapter 7 - THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR

Claire called Ethan’s school the morning after the kitchen incident.

The counselor, Ms. Reed, went quiet.

“I’m glad you called.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“Ethan has been asking to eat lunch in my office.”

“For how long?”

“About three weeks.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

“We did email.”

Claire searched.

There it was.

Buried beneath work messages.

SUBJECT: Ethan lunch concern.

She had skimmed it while driving between client meetings and flagged it mentally.

Then forgot.

Ms. Reed continued:

“He said Grandma checks whether he finishes.”

“How?”

“He brings the lunch container home.”

Claire felt sick.

Margaret had been inspecting leftovers.

Red marks on the Bennett Standards sheet.

One unfinished lunch became no video games.

Two became extra chores.

Three became dinner supervision.

The school counselor had not known about the switch.

But the fear had already entered school.

Claire realized the system had escaped the kitchen long before the violence did.
