Chapter 5 - LILY AND THE STALL

Lily loved the stall.

Not because children romanticize labor.

She got bored.

Complained about heat.

Asked for snacks every twenty minutes.

But she liked:

counting change,

drawing small price cards,

stacking napkins,

and choosing which flowers went in the mason jar.

Claire paid her five dollars on Saturdays.

Not wages in any legal sense.

Allowance for helping.

Lily called herself:

“assistant manager.”

One afternoon Margaret arrived in a luxury SUV.

Lily ran to her.

“Grandma!”

Margaret hugged her.

Then looked at the stall.

“Still doing this?”

Claire heard.

“So are you.”

Margaret ignored her.

She handed Lily a designer children’s jacket.

“Try it.”

Lily smiled.

Later, Margaret posted a photo of Lily wearing it.

Caption:

Teaching the next Morgan generation standards early.

Claire hated the implication.

But did not fight.

Why?

Because Lily adored Margaret.

They baked together.

Visited museums.

Had tea parties.

Margaret could be warm with Lily while still treating Claire’s work as embarrassing.

People are rarely one thing.

That complexity made what happened at the stall harder for Lily to understand.

Grandma did not arrive looking like a villain.

Grandma arrived looking like Grandma.

Then destroyed things.
