Chapter 7 - WHY MARGARET LIVESTREAMED IT
Margaret did not wake up intending to commit a crime.
She intended to make content.
That distinction did not help her much.
Her social-media consultant had recently told her that polished videos were underperforming.
Audiences wanted:
conflict,
authenticity,
family tension,
unscripted moments.
Margaret hated the advice.
Then watched the numbers.
Conflict performed.
A video where she criticized a hotel breakfast went viral.
Another about “cheap disposable decor” doubled normal engagement.
Margaret learned something dangerous.
Contempt converted well.
So when Claire refused the contract, Margaret built a story:
wealthy family matriarch confronts tacky roadside copycat using the Morgan name.
In Margaret’s mind, she was not destroying Claire.
She was protecting a brand.
The stick was supposed to knock over:
a sign,
an empty basket,
a lightweight display.
Then adrenaline and audience comments changed the pace.
More.
Again.
Show us.
Margaret responded to the energy.
She broke actual inventory.
Actual furniture.
In front of Lily.
Performance narrowed her judgment until only the screen felt real.
Margaret’s social-media consultant, Avery Cole, had warned her before the livestream.
“If this is a family dispute, do not go live.”
Margaret answered:
“It’s a brand issue.”
“Then definitely do not go live.”
Margaret laughed.
“You told me conflict performs.”
“Conflict. Not evidence.”
Margaret ignored her.
Later Avery watched the replay in disbelief.
At minute three, she texted:
STOP STREAM.
At minute four:
MARGARET TURN IT OFF.
At minute five:
CALL ME NOW.
Margaret never saw the messages.
She was too busy watching viewer count climb.
Attention had narrowed her field of vision literally and morally.
Lily remembered one detail adults missed.
Before smashing the first shelf, Margaret moved a glass jar of cash tips aside.
Why?
So it would not break.
That meant she was not completely out of control.
She was choosing targets.
When the police officer asked Lily what Grandma did, Lily said:
“She moved the money jar first.”
Claire’s chest tightened.
Not because the statement proved planning legally.

People can be emotionally escalated and still make selective decisions inside the escalation.
