Chapter 16 - THE SUITCASE

Four years after Amanda Whitman came home early and found Tyler Carter hurting Ethan, the same boy stood on her front porch holding a suitcase.

Tyler was thirteen now.

Taller.

Thinner.

Nothing like the furious nine-year-old Amanda remembered except for the way he held his shoulders when frightened.

Amanda opened the door but did not step aside.

“Where’s your mother?”

Tyler looked at the driveway.

“Gone.”

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know.”

Rain ran from his hair onto his jacket.

Amanda looked behind him.

No car.

No adult.

No Brooke.

“Who brought you here?”

“Uber.”

Amanda’s stomach tightened.

“You came alone?”

Tyler nodded.

Then held out an envelope.

“Mom said if anything happened, I should give you this.”

“Me?”

“Yes.”

Not Richard.

Amanda.

That was the first thing that felt wrong.

Ethan appeared behind her.

“Mom?”

Amanda turned immediately.

“Stay inside.”

Ethan recognized Tyler.

His expression changed.

Not panic.

Not exactly.

Memory.

Tyler saw it too.

He stepped backward.

“I can wait outside.”

Amanda looked at the rain.

“No.”

She opened the door farther.

“You can wait in the front room until I figure out what’s happening.”

Not Ethan’s bedroom.

Not unrestricted access.

Compassion did not require abandoning boundaries.

Amanda called Richard.

He arrived twenty minutes later.

The moment he saw Tyler, his face drained.

“Where’s Brooke?”

Tyler repeated:

“I don’t know.”

Amanda handed him the envelope.

Inside was a notarized document.

TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP AUTHORIZATION.

It named Richard as Tyler’s temporary guardian.

Richard read it.

Then read it again.

At the bottom was his signature.

Amanda watched his face.

“Did you sign that?”

“No.”

Tyler stared at him.

Richard shook his head harder.

“I swear.”

Four years earlier Amanda would have treated those words as meaningless.

Now she said:

“Then we verify it.”

She photographed every page.

Richard called his attorney.

Amanda called Brooke.

Disconnected.

She called again.

Same result.

Tyler sat on the edge of the sofa.

Ethan remained across the room.

Neither boy spoke.

Then Amanda noticed another page inside the envelope.

It was not part of the guardianship document.

It was a typed statement.

If Tyler is with you, do not let Gavin Cole take him.

Amanda looked at Tyler.

“Who is Gavin?”

Tyler’s face changed.

“My dad.”

Richard turned sharply.

Amanda frowned.

“I thought you didn’t know your father.”

Tyler swallowed.

“I didn’t.”

Then he looked at Richard.

“Until Mom told me Richard was never supposed to replace him.”

Richard went completely still.

Tyler continued.

“She said my real father found us.”

Amanda looked down at the forged guardianship papers.

Then at the frightened boy sitting inside the house where he had once been taught he belonged more than Ethan.

Before anyone could speak, headlights stopped outside.

A black SUV pulled into Amanda’s driveway.

A man stepped out.

Tyler whispered:

“That’s him.”

May you like

And the stranger walked directly toward Amanda’s door.
