Chapter 17 - THE MAN BROOKE RAN FROM

Amanda did not open the door.

She spoke through the security system.

“Identify yourself.”

The man looked toward the camera.

“Gavin Cole.”

Tyler’s biological father.

He was approximately forty.

Well dressed.

Calm.

Nothing about him looked immediately dangerous.

Amanda had learned years ago that appearance was useless evidence.

“What do you want?”

“My son.”

Tyler moved farther from the door.

Amanda noticed.

So did Richard.

Gavin continued.

“I know Tyler is inside. I’m not asking you to hand him over. I’m asking you to call the police and verify the emergency petition.”

That was not what Amanda expected.

Most dangerous men in stories arrived pounding doors.

This one arrived asking for verification.

Police came.

So did Gavin’s attorney.

The document he carried was real.

Gavin had filed a petition to establish paternity and request structured contact with Tyler.

Not immediate custody.

Not removal.

Contact.

Brooke had been served twelve days earlier.

Then she vanished.

The police refused to transfer Tyler that night because Brooke remained his legal custodial parent and the forged guardianship created uncertainty.

Richard agreed to keep Tyler temporarily at his condo.

Tyler refused.

“No.”

Richard looked hurt.

“Tyler—”

“I’m not going with you.”

“Why?”

Tyler stared at Amanda.

“Mom said I have to stay here.”

Amanda felt anger ignite.

“Your mother does not decide who lives in my house.”

Tyler flinched.

Amanda softened her voice.

“You are safe tonight. But we are not pretending your mother can assign my home to somebody.”

Ethan listened from the hallway.

Amanda hated that.

Gavin waited outside.

When Amanda finally spoke with him, he handed her copies of old court filings.

“I’ve been looking for Tyler for eleven years.”

Amanda stared.

“Brooke said you abandoned him.”

“She would.”

“You expect me to believe you?”

“No.”

That answer stopped her.

“I expect the court to verify what I’m saying.”

Gavin claimed he and Brooke had dated for two years.

When she became pregnant, they separated.

He requested testing after Tyler was born.

Brooke moved.

Then moved again.

She changed phone numbers.

By the time Gavin obtained an order, he could not locate them.

Amanda looked through the papers.

There were filings.

Returned service attempts.

Letters.

Dates.

A history.

Not proof Gavin was safe.

Proof the story was more complicated.

Then Gavin said:

“Ask Richard.”

Amanda slowly looked toward her ex-husband.

Richard’s face changed.

“What does Richard know?”

Gavin answered:

“He knows I tried to find Tyler.”

Amanda stared at Richard.

Richard said nothing.

That silence was familiar.

Too familiar.

“Richard.”

He looked at the floor.

“Not here.”

Amanda almost laughed.

“No.”

Not in front of children.

Not tonight.

Not the old version of secrecy disguised as sensitivity.

She sent both boys upstairs under clear rules and remained in the kitchen with Richard.

“Talk.”

Richard sat.

“Brooke told me Gavin was dangerous.”

“When?”

“During the affair.”

“And?”

“He contacted her once.”

“Did you speak to him?”

Richard hesitated.

“Yes.”

Amanda’s voice lowered.

“What did you do?”

Richard looked ashamed.

“I told him to stay away from Tyler.”

“You had no legal relationship to Tyler.”

“I thought I was protecting him.”

“Did you tell Gavin you were Tyler’s father?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Richard closed his eyes.

“I told him Tyler already had a family.”

Amanda felt disgust rise.

“You.”

“Yes.”

“You meant you.”

Richard nodded.

Then Amanda remembered his therapy confession.

Tyler looked at me like I was everything.

Richard had not merely enjoyed playing provider.

He had defended the role.

Amanda asked:

“Did you give Brooke money to hide from Gavin?”

Richard said:

“No.”

Then:

“But I gave her something worse.”

He reached for his phone.

An old email.

Sent four years earlier.

To Gavin Cole.

It read:

If you contact Brooke or Tyler again, I will make sure you never get near that boy.

Amanda stared at Richard.

Gavin had not simply lost track of his son.

May you like

Richard had helped convince him another man had taken his place.
