Chapter 1 - WHAT DID YOU GIVE HIM?

Claire Bennett leaned over the crib and saw white foam around Noah’s mouth.

For half a second, her brain refused to understand.

Then his small arms jerked.

His legs trembled.

Not violently.

Not continuously.

Enough.

“NOAH!”

She scooped her eight-month-old son into both arms and supported his head against her chest.

His body gave another weak involuntary jerk.

“Oh my God—he’s foaming!”

Diane Bennett stood in the nursery doorway.

Floral blouse.

Dark pants.

Strangely calm.

Claire whipped toward her.

“What did you do to my baby?!”

Diane raised both hands.

“Nothing! You’re overreacting!”

Noah made a weak sound.

Claire’s fear became motion.

She rushed out.

At the pediatric emergency department, Noah was awake but weak.

Claire held his tiny hand.

Dr. Arjun Patel examined him.

Asked about:

fever,

illness,

recent falls,

food,

medications,

household products.

Then he looked at Claire and Diane.

“Has he been given any medicine today?”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Then turned toward Diane.

Diane answered instantly.

“No. Nothing.”

Dr. Patel watched her.

“Syrup? Drops? Anything intended to make him sleep?”

Diane’s shoulders tightened.

“I said no.”

Claire stared.

The answer felt wrong.

Not because of what Diane said.

Because of how quickly she said it.

Dr. Patel continued the evaluation.

Noah’s breathing was stable.

His oxygen level was acceptable.

The jerking had stopped.

That was reassuring.

It did not explain what happened.

Then a nurse brought Claire Noah’s diaper bag from the car.

She placed it on a chair.

Something small fell from the side pocket.

A plastic dosing syringe.

Claire froze.

She did not use one like that.

Diane looked at it.

Then away.

Claire picked it up.

“Whose is this?”

Diane said nothing.

Dr. Patel turned.

The room changed.

Claire walked toward Diane.

“What did you give my baby?”

May you like

Diane finally whispered:

“It was only something to help him rest.”
