Chapter 12 - THE MARRIAGE
Claire did not divorce Daniel.
Not immediately.
She also did not forgive him because he testified honestly.
They entered counseling.
Goal:
decide whether trust could be rebuilt.
Not preserve marriage at any cost.
Daniel made concrete changes.
Daycare.
Shared pediatric portal access.
No family caregiver without both parents agreeing.
No jokes when Claire raised safety concerns.
No using his mother as default childcare because it was free.
Then Claire made a rule that surprised him:
“You are allowed to disagree with me.”
He frowned.
“I know.”
“No. You think supporting me means never questioning me now.”
That was another unhealthy extreme.
Claire did not want Daniel swinging from minimization to obedience.
She wanted partnership.
If he thought she was wrong:
say it.
Discuss.
Get medical advice when needed.
But no triangulating through Diane.

Mom says.
Then Daniel asked:
“Do you trust me with Noah?”
Claire took a long time.
“Yes.”
He cried.
Then she continued:
“I don’t trust you yet to protect a boundary when your mother hates it.”
He nodded.
Accurate.
Then the first real test came.
Diane’s sister Susan asked whether Diane could send Noah a birthday card.
Daniel wanted to say yes.
Claire said no.
He felt it was harmless.
They disagreed.
He did not pressure.
Did not call Susan separately.
Did not frame Claire as unforgiving.
He said:
“Okay. Not now.”
Claire noticed.
Trust returns through boring moments.
Then Noah turned one.
No dramatic party.
Small cake.
Daycare friends.
Rebecca came.
Thomas came.
Diane did not.
Claire felt sad.
