Chapter 3 - WHY HER MOTHER CHOSE CLARA

Ruth Vale had worked twelve years in the Hollow Ridge Company office.
Not as an executive.
As a clerk.
Invoices.
Payroll.
Shipping receipts.
Land deeds.
Clara knew that.
What she did not know was that Ruth had been copying records.
Elias told her the rest.
Two years earlier, several miners died after a tunnel collapse.
The company called it an accident.
But inspection logs showed the lower supports had failed repeatedly.
Repairs were ordered.
Never completed.
Money allocated for safety vanished.
Then one engineer disappeared after threatening to report it.
The engineer’s name was Thomas Vale.
Clara’s father.
She stopped breathing.
“My father died of fever.”
“That’s what Ruth told you.”
Clara backed away.
“No.”
Elias’s face tightened.
“I knew Thomas.”
“You’re lying.”
“I worked the ridge with him.”
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
Elias pulled a folded paper from inside his coat.
A photograph.
Old.
Water-stained.
Thomas Vale stood beside Elias outside a mining shed.
Younger Elias.
No scar.
Thomas alive.
Clara stared until the candle blurred.
“When?”
“Seven years ago.”
Her father supposedly died eight years earlier.
Clara looked up.
“My mother lied.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas found the missing money.”
The ledger existed.
And Ruth knew where it was.
But instead of exposing Hollow Ridge, she tried to bargain with it.
Then she needed someone else blamed.
Someone young.
Disposable.
May you like
Close enough to Thomas to make the story believable.
Clara.
