Chapter 8 - WHAT HAPPENED TO THOMAS

The ledger answered part of the mystery.
A coded payment line:
T.V. relocation—$8,000.
Raven Facility.
Elias knew Raven.
An abandoned company clinic near the Tennessee line.
Federal agents raided it forty-eight hours after receiving photographs of the ledger.
They found old confinement rooms.
Medical logs.
No Thomas.
But one employee record listed:
Thomas Vale.
Alias: Thomas Grey.
Maintenance contractor.
Three years after his supposed death.
He had been alive.
Forced to work under another name after being threatened with harm to Clara.
Then he escaped.
A bus-camera image placed him in Knoxville four years earlier.
After that:
nothing.
Clara did not get the miracle she wanted.
No father walking out of the rain.
No perfect reunion.
Only proof.
He survived at least four years longer than she had been told.
And he tried to protect her.
That mattered.
Then Ruth confessed the rest.
Thomas had begged her to leave Hollow Ridge with him.
She refused.
She was afraid of poverty.
Afraid of running.
Afraid Clara would starve.
When Hollow Ridge security came looking, Ruth told them where Thomas planned to meet Elias.
She thought they would threaten him.
May you like
Not disappear him.
Her cowardice became a door she could never close again.
