Chapter 7 - RUTH CAME LOOKING FOR HER

Ruth found them before the riders did.

She appeared at the abandoned lookout alone.

No horse.

No lantern.

Soaked from the continuing rain.

Clara stepped outside.

Elias reached for his rifle.

Ruth raised both hands.

“I came to warn you.”

Clara laughed.

“About the men you sold me to?”

Ruth’s face twisted.

“I had no choice.”

“There’s always a choice.”

“You’re nineteen. You think life is clean.”

“No. I think mothers aren’t supposed to trade daughters for time.”

Ruth flinched.

Then looked at Elias.

“They know the lookout.”

“How?”

“One of the riders recognized the old trail.”

Elias cursed.

Ruth stepped closer.

“I told them Clara had the ledger because they were going to kill me.”

Clara stared.

“So you gave them me.”

“I thought Elias could get you out.”

“What?”

Ruth looked ashamed.

“I knew he wasn’t working for them.”

Elias froze.

“You knew?”

“Not everything.”

Ruth’s voice broke.

“But I knew you hated Hollow Ridge more than you hated me.”

Clara’s anger wavered.

Not forgiveness.

Confusion.

Ruth had given Elias the coins deliberately.

A signal.

A false sale designed to move Clara into the hands of the one man Ruth suspected might protect her.

But she also told the riders Clara had the ledger.

That part was real.

Ruth had saved herself by redirecting danger.

Then tried to control where the danger landed.

Maternal protection and betrayal existed in the same act.

Clara hated that complexity.

It denied her the comfort of a simple villain.
