Chapter 4 - ELIAS'S SCAR

Clara finally asked:

“What happened to your face?”

Elias touched the scar unconsciously.

“The same men.”

After Thomas found the safety-fraud records, he brought copies to Elias.

They planned to take them to a federal mining inspector in Asheville.

They never made it.

Company guards stopped them on a ridge road.

Thomas escaped.

Elias did not.

He spent three days locked in a maintenance shack.

Interrogated.

Beaten.

Threatened.

Then left beside a ravine because the guards assumed he would die.

He didn’t.

The scar came from the fall.

Clara stared.

“And my father?”

“He disappeared.”

“Dead?”

“I don’t know.”

That answer hurt more than certainty.

For eight years Clara had grieved a grave that did not exist.

“What does my mother know?”

“More than she told you.”

Elias explained Ruth began working directly with the company’s security chief after Thomas vanished.

At first maybe under pressure.

Later willingly.

Payments appeared.

Debts disappeared.

A new house.

Better clothes.

Then Thomas’s original ledger resurfaced.

Someone told Hollow Ridge Clara had it.

Who?

Ruth.

Clara whispered:

“My mother gave them my name.”

Elias nodded.

“And gave me three coins so they’d believe the handoff had begun.”

“Why you?”

“Because they think I’m willing to sell people for enough money.”

Clara stared at the scarred hermit.

“Are you?”

His mouth hardened.

“No.”

May you like

“Then why do they think that?”

“Because I spent six years making sure they did.”
