Chapter 13 - THE STREET TURNED AGAINST HER
Megan walked in with two other former homeowners Emily had never met.
One described repeated threats after refusing to sign an easement.
Another recalled Margaret suggesting their pets made the block “look chaotic.”
Each had complaint histories. Each had pressure letters. Each had eventually given in.
Margaret tried to interrupt.
Gregory Sloane tried to object.
Nobody cared anymore.
Then Arthur entered.
He carried the original liaison agreement—not a copy—and handed it directly to the HOA president.
“This is my wife’s contract with Crestline,” he said, voice breaking. “She was being paid to push holdouts out.”
The president looked like he might faint.
Karen Alvarez took the document and read aloud the line that mattered most:
Final payout contingent upon successful compliance or disposition of remaining noncooperative parcels, including Carter property.
Margaret stood abruptly.
“This is ridiculous,” she snapped. “They’re all lying.”
Emily looked at her.
“No,” she said quietly. “You just finally ran out of people who were afraid of you.”
Margaret’s eyes flashed.
For one wild second, Emily thought the older woman might actually lunge at her.
Instead, Margaret pointed at the screen.
“It was a dog!” she shouted. “A mutt! She would have sold eventually!”
Gasps exploded through the room.
Even Gregory Sloane stepped back.
Officer Reed rose from the rear row.
“Margaret Wilson,” he said, voice carrying hard through the clubhouse, “based on the evidence submitted in the animal cruelty investigation and the associated fraud inquiry, you need to come with me.”
Margaret stared at him in disbelief.
“For a dog?”
“For what you did,” Reed said.
She turned toward the board as if somebody might save her.
Nobody moved.
Then she looked at Emily one last time.
Not smug now.
Not amused.
Just furious.
Emily met that stare without blinking.
